REDFOOTS & YELLOWFOOTS
TURTLES OF THE WORLD Series
Testudinidae Number 3
Red-footed tortoises (Chelonoidis carbonaria) have been popular tortoises in the herpetological trade for decades. These medium-sized tortoises are not only beautiful and hardy but are also one of the most personable tortoises being kept in captivity today. The Red-footed tortoise is native to South America and is found in nature in Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and on a few Caribbean islands.
Amanda Ebenhack has been keeping and breeding Red-footed tortoise for ten years. She is a permitted wildlife rehabilitator in Florida, specializing in tortoises. Together with her veterinarian, Dr. Orlando Diaz, they rescue, rehabilitate, and release between 100 to 500 turtles and tortoises each year. Ebenhack is also a board member of the Asian Turtle Consortium, Turtle Homes Rescue, and she is president of the Central Florida Wildlife Center.
In REDFOOTS & YELLOWFOOTS, Ebenhack will show you how to properly care for your Red-footed tortoises and Yellow-footed tortoises by replicating as closely as possible their natural environment. By exploring attractive enclosure ideas, planning a correct and varied diet, offering tips on captive breeding, and offering hydration and health tips, she will help you keep your tortoise healthy and happy for years to come.
